Are you talking to a robot?

Bob: Yes, Alice! I am teaching my AI assistant some slang, but I think the future of English is just emojis.

Alice: Oh no! Will we write “I love you” with just a heart and a picture of a pizza?

Bob: Exactly! And “I am tired” will just be a sleeping cat emoji.

Alice: That sounds easy, but how will we write complex things, like math or philosophy?

Bob: Simple. A brain emoji plus a question mark. Boom, philosophy!

Alice: Haha! Seriously though, I read that more and more people speak English as a second language now.

Bob: Yes, “Globish”! Non-native speakers actually control the future of English.

Alice: So, will English get simpler? Like, no more irregular verbs?

Bob: I hope so! “Go, goed, goed” sounds much better than “go, went, gone.”

Alice: No way, Bob, that sounds terrible!

Bob: Maybe we will all speak a mix of English and Spanish, or English and Chinese.

Alice: “Spanglish” is already very popular. My ears are crying.

Alice: Okay, okay. Let’s practice our future English. Chocolate emoji, thumbs up?

Bob: Yes! That means “I want chocolate now!”

Current Situation

Today, English is the global “lingua franca” (a common language used by people who speak different native languages). There are actually more non-native English speakers in the world than native speakers. Because of this, “Globish” (a simplified version of English) is becoming very popular for international business and travel. Technology, like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and smartphones, is also changing how we communicate. Some experts think English grammar will become simpler over time, while others think we will use more visual elements like emojis and short videos to speak to each other.

Key Phrases

As a second language: To speak a language that is not your mother tongue. Example: She speaks English as a second language, but she is very fluent.

Over time: Gradually; as time passes. Example: Your English vocabulary will grow over time.

Non-native speaker: A person who learned a language after they learned their first language as a child. Example: The internet has more non-native speakers of English than native ones.

A mix of [A] and [B]: A combination of two different things. Example: Spanglish is a mix of Spanish and English words.

Grammar Points

1.
